Health classes explained
The meanings behind Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard rankings, and the factors that place people in each tier.
Carriers assign term life pricing through health categories. Company names differ slightly, yet the overall structure is uniform: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, with extra fees for above-average hazard. Smokers sit in a parallel tier system with increased premiums.
What underwriters look at
Height-to-weight measurements, pressure and lipid readings, cancer or cardiac disease in your family before age 60, driving conduct, current medications, job responsibilities and recreational activities, and cigarette or nicotine consumption. The highest tier demands excellent marks across virtually everything; Preferred accepts a small variance; Standard Plus and Standard allow managed illnesses including regulated high pressure.
How to use the quote tool
When asked about your health, answer truthfully: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus and Average to Standard. Estimates follow that grouping; insurers establish your real group during review. When uncertain, obtain quotes at both levels to evaluate; the underwriting step determines the actual result. Overestimating your wellness won't drop your premium; it only reduces accuracy.
